Green Day Trolls Will Smith Over Alleged AI Tour Crowds: “Don’t Need A.I. For Our Crowds”
Main Post: Green Day Trolls Will Smith Over Alleged AI Tour Crowds: “Don’t Need A.I. For Our Crowds”
Top Comment: Imagine going back to 1999 and telling someone that Green Day and Will Smith would be feuding over A.I. crowds in 2025.
Opinions on Green Day?
Main Post:
I've seen mixed reactions on Green Day, saying they're punk, they're not punk ect so what y'all think?
Top Comment: Billie Joe has given back a lot of $ and resources to his community, esp 924 Gilman. That to me is punk. Music opinions are subjective. I was signed to his label Adeline in the early 2000s so I can say this with first-hand experience. My fave album is Kerplunk. That cassette has so many stories. I've worn it down to the point of no return.
What the hell happened to Green Day ?
Main Post:
I try so hard to get into the last several albums and find zero motivation to listen to anything post American Idiot. I don't see how it's possible that every single album, from 39/Smooth through American Idiot, each has its own distinct sound both musically and as a recording. Yet every single album since American Idiot just sounds like it was recorded at the same time as American Idiot, only the songs are simply not good enough to have been on American Idiot. The trio is especially unlistenable as well as Father of All. Did Billie's creative juice simply quit flowing? There is seriously not one single song in the last 20 years that has done anything to advance the band. Yes, their popularity has grown, but only due to the continued interest in the first 7 records. I urge you to listen to the first 7 albums in order, and notice the distinct sound that each record has, and then the next 7 and tell me if there's any difference between any of the last 7 records. There isn't.
Top Comment: American Idiot was seen as a huge return to form in an era where Green Day were pretty much completely washed up. They were opening for Blink 182 in the early 2000's. Their new album allegedly gets stolen and from what I recall they wanted to just disband entirely at that point, then as a last desperate attempt, they put out what's considered what's widely considered their best album ever. Well clearly, everyone liked that. So why not do it again? And again? And again?
Let's talk: 20 years of Green Day's *American Idiot*
Main Post:
The 20th anniversary of American Idiot is approaching (I've seen some sources say it was released on the 20th of September 2004, and others on the 21st?), and I gave it another listen this evening, with my partner. It truly is a fantastic album IMO, and has stood the test of time really well. I think it flows really well, the story actually sort of makes sense (pretty rare with concept albums, I find!), and many of the songs are classics for a reason - the title track, "Jesus of Suburbia", "Holiday", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "Wake Me Up When September Ends", etc. My favourite songs are slightly lesser-known though - "Letterbomb" and the closing "Whatsername".
I was only six and a half when it came out, so I can't necessarily speak to the impact it had first-hand, but by all accounts it was enormous, and it's still a very popular album 20 years later. Some accused Green Day of 'selling out' but I can't see it - I don't think releasing a concept album with two 9-minute suites on it really counts as 'selling out'. It just came out at the right time.
So, what do you think of American Idiot?
Top Comment: I was 18. It had a huge impact but a lot of people did consider it ‘selling out’. It was popular in teenagers’ bedrooms but was also played in supermarkets. 2004 was a very political year (an election year in the US) and there was a lot of hatred towards Bush after the Iraq War. In the uk as an 18 year old we all thought the American Idiot was Bush and we all agreed with that sentiment.
I don’t like Green Day at all
Main Post:
Apologies in advance if there are already threads of this opinion but I felt the urge to create my own.
During work I tend to listen to a good amount of 90s-00s rock/grudge/nu-metal/etc. mixed up randomly on Spotify (too lazy to make a playlist). I’ll usually pick something by Linkin Park, Alice In Chains, or a similar band for the Spotify algorithm to build the mix off of, so it is not uncommon for a Green Day song to get thrown into the mix. Every time I hear a Green Day song begin it’s an automatic skip for me. I personally can’t listen to the super whiny vocals and (in my opinion) repetitive and super basic guitar riffs. Sorry, but their music is just not for me.
Top Comment: I personally can’t listen to the super whiny vocals Dude, I get this. You'd LOVE sleeping with sirens
What happened to Green Day after American Idiot?
Main Post:
I remember coming back 5 years after that huge albums with 21 Guns felt a bit underwhelming (and a Working Class Hero cover somewhere along the way), though in retrospect that's still a more memorable pop song than anything I can remember from them in last 15 years. With their recent Trump comments I thought they might be due for a comeback but they went with stuff they could do in their sleep like American Dream is killing us, bada bing bada boom boom and Do you want to be my girlfriend??? I guess Saviors is more punk than pop and I'm a bigger fan of pop.
Was Green Day always limited in the types of riffs and song structure they like and therefore bound to get repetitive once you heard enough of them? Or did they not realize at their best they're just as much of a commerical pop punk band as ones like Blink and Offspring, and getting away from writing the catchiest hits you can is not their strengths. I guess you can say that by the time they released 21th Century Breakdown in 2009 they'd been active nearly 20 years and not every band owes us their best stuff into their 3rd decade. Still I thought they would have a few more alt radio hits in 2010s and 2020s here and there I like.
Top Comment: Active for 37 years, just put out a new album. Have toured extensively through most of that time. Won tons of awards, sold tons of albums, made a successful Broadway musical out of an album, and have been invested in helping support newer bands at various times. They have a specific sound with minimal variation. Over time the audience looking for that shrinks. Compare to say Foo Fighters, Muse, and Arctic Monkeys who have evolved in many ways over the years. I still think Dookie is in my top 10 albums all time.
Green Day has become boring because there is no complexity in their music
Main Post:
I used to love Green Day when I was a kid. They were fun, three-chord pop punk songs. The problem for me is that there songs have become predictable. They use the same chord progressions over and over. I give them a lot of respect for staying in the mainstream for over 30 years now, but I feel like I’ve grown out of it. I want to be excited for their new record, but I don’t care.
I saw them live in 98 and they put on an amazing show. Billie Joe has a ton of stage presence and engages the audience. I would go see them live still and have fun, but I never choose to listen to their albums anymore.
Top Comment: I think an understated issue is nobody acknowledges that bands from the 90s are just fucking old now. Think of it this way: In 2004, nobody was saying “Damn, Elton John and Rod Stewart just don’t turn ‘em in like they used to anymore,” because we didn’t expect them to be at the forefront of popular music three decades and some change into their careers, but if you tune in to a “modern” rock or alternative radio station today, you’ll probably hear bands like Green Day or Foo Fighters or the Chili Peppers. Those guys are de facto classic rock bands now, and the only reason we don’t think of them as such is because the OG classic rock guys like Elton and Rod are, to a large extent, still around and making music.
Green Day - Saviors [NEW ALBUM]
Main Post: Green Day - Saviors [NEW ALBUM]
Top Comment: The mixing/production on this album is great. Everything sounds so loud and crunchy and in-your-face without sounding crushed or overblown. Guitars sound dope and Billie’s voice doesn’t feel filtered to death for the first time in forever. After playing Blink’s new album to death it’s such a breath of fresh air to hear a new album in the genre mixed this well. The big highlight for me is the bass... Mike’s back playing insane bass lines again and it’s real clear in the mix, I love it.
what's your opinion on green day?
Main Post:
green day were the first band that made me jump on the punk and metal world and they are one of my favorite band; especially because they mean a lot to me. I'm a huge fan of their first three album. by the way I see a lot of people shitting on this band, and as far as I can love their stuff, I can see why they do this. btw what's your opinion?
Top Comment: Green Day were the band that got me into rock music when I was 10 years old. Saw them live last weekend and it was a childhood dream come true. IMO American Idiot is their magnum opus. I respect their energy and passion to still be doing what they are at the age of 50, but their best days are long gone now and they're more of a nostalgia cashcow now (I mean that in the most respectful way possible).
